Wedding Toasts

Wedding Toasts

Wedding toasts are good wishes or blessings for the couple that are said out in the form of poems, quotes or one liner. Unlike wedding speeches, these are short and sweet and just a matter of few seconds to a couple of minutes.

Wedding toasts could be purely good wishes, philosophical quotes, sentimental ones, humorous toasts, etc. It depends on your relationship with the newly wed couple, the tone of the wedding, your sense of humor, etc what type of toast you would like to raise.

You can compose your own toasts in a very creative manner. Make sure these suit the personalities of the newly wed couple and are relevant. Composing toasts are not all that difficult as these are based on personal relationships, what you feel about the bride, the groom and what you want to wish them. It is essential to prepare and practice the toasts prior to the wedding day.

Traditional Wedding Toasts

Traditional wedding toasts are age old English and Irish toasts that have been said since ages. These are purely blessings and good wishes. These quotes typically reflect all that the married couple should have, the way their relationship should be, etc. It is all about the fact that they should have enough work to do, enough money to live, their own house, their own children, etc. These quotes also reveal about ideal relationships and marriages i.e. marriage for a lifetime, commitment, resolving differences, bringing up children, love and understanding that is essential in a relationship, etc. Some of the traditional wedding toasts go like this-

  • May there always be work for your hands to do.
  • May your purse always hold a coin or two.
  • May the sun always shine warm on your windowpane.
  • May the hand of a friend always be near you.
  • And may God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.”

Sentimental Wedding toasts

You need not be overly sentimental even if you are very close to the bride and groom. However, you can say out whatever you feel from within, preferably without making people cry. One idea is to make a slideshow of some childhood pictures and share some fond memories. It would be even better to have it included it in your quote. You could include children of your siblings to say a quote or say something about you. You could include some of the love quotes like “Love is not all about gazing at each other, it is about looking in the same direction”.

Humorous Wedding Toasts

It’s a good idea to include humor in your toast quotes. It’s always good to make people laugh. Although, essentially the humorous toasts should also convey the same meaning like any traditional quote. It should essentially convey good wishes to the newly wed couple. Probably if you know the bride or the groom well, you could add some funny childhood memories or a particular incidence. Humorous quotes require certain skill and a good sense of humor as you cannot lose out on the meaning of the toast while adding humor to it.

Wedding toast is an important and common ritual wherein a drink like wine or punch is taken as an expression of good wishes, congratulating the couple and wishing them all the health, success and prosperity in their marriage. Wedding toasts are raised by the best man, close friends and family members who wish to raise them. The toasts are first raised for the bride traditionally. One that is over, the groom speaks and thanks everyone and especially his and the bride’s parents.

Wedding Toast Ideas

The following tidbit began a wonderful and personal toast to the bride and groom from the bride's brother: "John, take Emily's hand and place your hand over her's. Now, remember this moment and cherish it... because this will be the last time you'll ever have the upper hand!"

As the vicar wed my cousin, he produced a roll of white toilet paper and said "Let us all hope and pray that your married life is like this toilet roll - soft, strong and ever so long."

May you never lie, cheat or drink. But if you must lie, lie with each other. And if you must cheat, cheat death. And if you must drink, drink with us for we all love you and wish you both the love and happiness of which you deserve.

My brother in-law used this toast. It is simple and we loved it. "Let us toast the health of the bride, let us toast the health of the groom, let us toast the priest who tied. And I'd personally like to toast every guest in the room."

May you swear, steal, and lie.
Swear by all that's good and true.
Steal away your cares and sorrows.
And lie in the arms of the one you love.

May you both live as long as you want and never want as long as you live.

May the love you express to each other today, always be the first thoughts during any trying times in the future.

I see the love you both have in each other's eyes and as your love grows for one another, may you look back on this day and know this is when you loved each other the least.

I'll be toasting the bride and groom with Shakespeare's sonnets. 18 for her, 53 for him, 116 for them both. I'm AWFUL at speeches, so I'm letting the expert speak for me.

Remember the love you feel today. Look back on it daily and measure how much it has grown.

May the Best of Your Yesterdays
Be the Worst of Your Tomorrows
